UCL ROUND OF 16 DRAW 2026
I woke up this morning to check how the UCL draw turned out, hoping that Bayern Munich had an easy road to the final. To my despair, Bayern was put on the same side of the bracket against PSG, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Just to give you an idea of how imbalanced this year’s UCL draw is, the number of UCL trophies won by the left side of the bracket is 31, while the right side of the bracket has a grand total of 5, which comes out of an out-of-form Barcelona, AND THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE A REAL DEFENSE THIS YEAR. Anyways, the severe disparity of difficulty to the final is quite evident. The UCL never fails to deliver us some amazing games. The UEFA Champions League is arguably the most widespread tournament in the world, racking up hundreds of millions of viewers a year. The biggest club tournament in the world comes back with another batch of absolute thrillers this upcoming week. THE UCL Round of 16 draw has concluded, and with so many different matchups, the UCL is in good hands.
Chelsea vs. PSG: the rematch from the Club World Cup final, where PSG dominated competition like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich and then faced Chelsea in the final. After an Enzo Maresca tactical masterclass, Chelsea won 3-0, which absolutely shocked the soccer community. However, with Enzo Moresca’s sacking back in January, Chelsea has been in poor form and even suffered a loss to Arteta’s “Set Piece FC” this Sunday. On the flip side of it, PSG look like they are coming back from their setbacks, as they have just passed Lens in Ligue 1 and are looking to once again compete for the UCL. With Chelsea’s horrible form and PSG’s comeback as a top team, I say PSG wins 3-1 on aggregate with the likes of Dembele (oh wait, he’s injured; of course he is), Doue, and Kvaratshkhelia scoring at the Parc des Princes before Cole Palmer scrapes one in at Stamford Bridge.
Who could have possibly guessed this? A team whose hometown, Bodø Municipality, has half the capacity of the Santiago Bernabéu (100,000+) has not only made it to the Round of 16 but is also favored to win over their opponent, Sporting CP. As of now, FK Bodo Glimpt is the very clear and obvious dark horse of this year’s UCL. In the league stage, Bodo Glimt faced Manchester City and Atletico Madrid and won 3-1 and 2-1, respectively. While in the knockouts, Bodo Glimt knocked out the European giant and last year’s finalists, Inter Milan! Sorry, they ANNIHILATED Inter Milan by thrashing them, ending in a 5-1 aggregate.
Liverpool vs. Galatasaray is a matchup waiting for an upset; Liverpool has been the most inconsistent team in UCL this season. While Galatasaray had a near scare in the knockout against Juventus, thanks to striker Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray advanced. The wild card factor will be how the teams perform away. Galatasaray has the best fans in the entire world, while Liverpool has very passionate fans, and Anfield is no safe place to play. Yet I still have Liverpool going through 2-1 on aggregate. Tottenham and Atletico Madrid are a similar story; despite Tottenham being in a relegation battle in their own league, they managed to finish 4th in the league stage and are the defending champions of the UEFA Europa League. Atletico Madrid are coming off an absolute masterclass against Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey, where they took a comfortable 4-0 lead in the first leg, so in the second leg, they sat back and let Barcelona attack. I have Atletico Madrid going through 2-1 after an Ademola Lookman goal in the 73rd minute in the second leg.
Arsenal and Bayern Munich (the first and second place teams in the league stage) both have fairly easy teams to play in the Round of 16 with Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen. I believe both Arsenal and Bayern are too strong for a potential upset here, as Bayern will dismantle Atalanta 7-2, while Arsenal comfortably beats Bayern Leverkusen 2-0. But Barcelona and Newcastle are a little more difficult to decide. Newcastle are a fairly consistent team, but when they face a giant in football, they tend to get easily dismantled, such as their humiliating defeat to Man City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. But Barcelona are coming off a failed attempt at a comeback (Remontada) against Atletico Madrid in the Copa Del Rey semis. After a valiant effort, Barcelona still lost 4-3 on aggregate. Yet Barcelona will overcome Newcastle in a 3-1 win as Marcus Rashford leads Barcelona through in the second leg after scoring a brace.
It was bound to happen; Man City played against Real Madrid for the FIFTH time in 7 years. As always, this intense rivalry HAS to be the highlight of the round of 16. While Madrid is suffering from a spell of bad form after a loss to Getafe 1-0 this Monday, they are still to be taken as a strong obstacle for Man City and a contender for the UCL. Man City is entirely different. Making an astounding comeback in the English Premier League by coming back from a 9-point deficit to only 2, that oil money sure does work. They are the 3rd most likely to win this season. While I feel like Madrid WILL have a good fight, the firepower of Man City (and their 115 charges against fair play) will break down Real Madrid with a 3-1 victory, with Haaland smashing 2 in the Bernabeu, followed up by a Vinicius goal to hype up all the Madrid fans, just to be comfortably defeated at the Etihad by a Semenyo goal to put the game to bed.
This year’s Round of 16 captures what makes the UEFA Champions League so special. The draw may feel lopsided, as the left side looks like a war zone stacked with European royalty, and the right side has a smoother ride to the final, but that’s exactly why we watch. The history, trophies, and the narratives matter, but on Champions League nights, none of it guarantees survival. 2 games, one red card, one goal, and one save can flip an entire tie on its head. No matter how unfair the draw seems, one thing is certain: the road to Budapest will be brutal, dramatic, and unforgettable, but that is why the Champions League remains the greatest club competition in the world.
