With the World Cup right around the corner, and the Premiere League well under way, it is easy to overlook the other exciting soccer tournaments happening right now, like the Champions League. The Champions League is a European soccer tournament involving club teams. The Champions League was created in 1955 by Gabriel Hanot, however it wasn’t always called the Champions League. It was previously called the European Cup and it was changed to the Champions League in 1992. After a 12 year career playing for the French national team and various club teams, Gabriel Hanot became a well known coach and later became the founder of the Champions League. The Champions League runs for a season, with match days about once a week (excluding several international and other breaks). The top teams from each of the biggest leagues in Europe will qualify for the champions league, and then thirty two club teams from various different leagues across all of Europe compete for the Champions League.
The 2025/26 season is in full swing and it has already been quite an exciting tournament. The first match of the season kicked off on September 16, 2025 and the final is set to be on May 30, 2026. The teams playing in the Champions League are some of the best in the world, including: Manchester City, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Barcelona. Currently leading the table is Arsenal, followed by PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) and Bayern München. Eventually the league will go to the round of sixteen, and continue narrowing down until the final in a knockout format. The top eight teams will go directly to the round of sixteen while the bottom twelve will be eliminated, leaving the middle 12 to play knockout games to decide who will go onto the round of sixteen.
Currently sitting just shy of the top eight is Manchester City. Manchester City won the tournament in 2023 and they have been desperate to retake the throne ever since. With star scorer, Erling Haaland and new signings such as Rayan Cherki, they are hoping that this might be their second Champions League title. Arsenal has been looking promising, not only leading the Champions League table, but also currently sitting at the top of the premier league. Arsenal has won every single one of the 5 games they have played, and are one of the favorites to win it all. One team who has put on a shockingly good performance is Sporting CP. Sporting CP is a less well-known Portuguese team who is still doing comfortably better than world class teams such as FC Barcelona, and Liverpool. Although Sporting CP is quite an underdog, they are currently in the top eight of the champions league table. Expected to do very well in the champions league is FC Barcelona, however they have not been doing so great in tournament play so far l, currently sitting in eighteenth. Despite their recent success in La Liga and their young star Lamine Yamal, they have not been meeting expectations in the champions league.
With five months remaining, there are sure to be many exciting matches, miraculous upsets, and triumphant dominations as the road to the final shortens. As the competition narrows over the next few months, one team will make it all the way to the top and become champions of Europe.
