AI has been flooding through schools like never before. Students are cheating on anything they can do on their computers, no matter how much surveillance they’re under. Some of the reasons AI use is bad for students are that the students rely mainly on it for homework and struggle without it for tests, it spreads misinformation, and it takes away from their creativity.
AI use is so easy that students rely on it to do most of their work and tests. You can get ChatGPT on almost any laptop, phone, tablet, or device you can use online. People of any age can use it. There are reports of students using AI on their tests to get into college or on medical exams to become a doctor. If you went to the doctors and your doctor had to step out of the room to ask ChatGPT to diagnose you, how would you feel? If your parents told you not to believe everything you see online, how does AI differ?
With students using AI for tests and essays, widespread misinformation has spread. A report from a teacher said he had asked his students to write an essay on recent work in philosophy, but the topic shared the same name as medieval theology, and most had written on the wrong thing with AI. AI has had many instances of spreading misinformation on tests and mainly on homework/essays. It can also harm you. If you are giving a presentation on something important and you spread misinformation, you can get penalized and possibly worse, like hurt someone with your information.
Students are slowly losing their own creativity. What I mean when I say they are losing their creativity is that they are not able to come up with essay topics or homework questions on their own. They rely on AI to help them with their questions and outlines, etc. While some people argue that AI use can be good for studying and planning events, I disagree with that take. While it can help prepare students for big tests, it’s not foolproof against misinformation, and it’s one of the easiest things to find and use to cheat. Some arguments make me understand why they think AI use is okay. It’s not horrible. If it were only used for studying, I would understand, but almost all of the students who use it do not use it just for learning.
At the end of the day, I cannot stop students from using AI. I can only hope they will use it only for real studying. While I cannot do much as a student myself, all schools can block it from browsers and more. I want to live in an AI-free learning environment to improve our students’ knowledge as future doctors, lawyers, and engineers.
