AI has been the talk of the last three years ever since OpenAI released ChatGPT in November of 2022, and it has quickly changed the landscape of education. The NYC school district quickly banned it after just three months, later changing their decision. But, this seems to be an unnecessary setback in the world of AI in education because in Miami-Dade County they have quickly embraced AI and made a model that has transformed their school district. I’m here to tell you why Artificial Intelligence can be a useful tool that can adapt to your needs while also allowing you to learn for yourself, this is the future of education across America.
An outstanding reason why there is a dire need for responsible AI use and integration into education is that the earlier you show students how to use AI correctly, the more awareness on how not to use AI to hinder their learning. Giving clear guidelines allows students to understand what an ethical use of AI can be, for their future in education. This will also allow them to use AI to help their learning rather than hinder it. In Miami-Dade County, they trained an AI model that helps generate ideas or rephrase questions, but while also making sure it can’t give direct answers. This shows that when used correctly, AI is actually beneficial to the development of students.
A second reason AI should be integrated into education is that it provides real-world experience because big companies will soon want students to have hands-on experience with AI. As the New York Times states, Miami’s programs allow students new ways to interact with material that would’ve otherwise not have happened, and because of this almost eliminate the need to cheat using AI, because for the most part, you will have a pretty deep understanding of the topics that are at hand. This practical experience with AI will likely be a useful thing in most careers in the future.
Some people may argue that AI is another tool used only for cheating. But, cheating was around before AI. Students could look up answers, copy homework, and find shortcuts long before AI. It is not making a new problem, it is just another tool that can be used in place of real learning. Miami County’s AI model shows us that it is possible and achievable to create a system where education and AI can work hand in hand. Banning AI will leave students with no real AI experience leaving them at a disadvantage which is totally against what the school system is trying to achieve.
Schools should move forward with this introduction to AI by making structured AI guidelines, teacher-led instruction, teacher training, and ethical-use lessons like Kompella describes. In a broader context, if this isn’t implemented soon millions of students will soon be left at an extreme disadvantage, while embracing such a change will help them succeed in a world that is being shaped by AI.
