On Feb. 28, Scott Blackmun announced that he was stepping down as CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee, in the wake of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. The organization said that Blackmun resigned due to ongoing prostate cancer, but some suspect there may be more to the resignation.

About two months ago, Nassar was accused of sexual abuse by many young gymnasts, including two-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman and over 150 other women. Nassar was a world-renowned sports physician who was treating gymnasts and other athletes who were involved in sports at Michigan State University. Nassar has been sentenced to sentenced to up to 125 years in prison for his ludicrous actions.

During Nassar’s trial, Blackmun was heavily criticized, and several lawmakers demanded his resignation. U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Joni Ernst even called on him to resign when it was discovered that he might have known about the abuse allegations from parents as early as Sept. of 2015, but did not take measures to address the problem.

Susanne Lyons is to take over for Blackmun. Lyons was a USOC board member since 2010 and was chosen in January to manage the investigation into the gymnastics scandal. She has already stated that she will be increasing funding for psychological counseling for the victims of Nassar’s abuse as well as investigation into the Safe Sport initiative to protect other athletes.
