What is March Madness?
As March continues, the anticipation of this year’s March Madness tournament reaches new heights. In March Madness, 64 teams compete in a bracket system to become the NCAA tournament champions. The teams are placed in four different categories: the East, West, Midwest, and South. Each region has sixteen teams, which are ranked from worst to best. A team’s position determines which team they will play in the first round. After that, the winners advance, and the field is cut in half after every round. The last team standing wins.
Teams to watch in the tournament:
Before the brackets are set for March Madness, conference tournaments are played as the final games before the unpredictable tournament. The three best teams in the NCAA rankings right now are the Purdue Boilermakers, the Houston Cougars, and defending champions, the UConn Huskies. All three of these teams finished the regular season with a record of 28-3 and are heavy favorites in their conference tournaments. In my opinion, the team to win March Madness is the tenth-ranked Creighton Bluejays, but anything can happen. That is why it is called March Madness, after all.
Underdog Teams:
March Madness is all about the crazy upsets and seeing underdog teams make a run when no one thought they would. At least once a year, an underdog team will pull off a huge upset and send a major team home early. Many teams have a good chance of sneaking into the tournament Some of the best are the Oregon Ducks, New Mexico Lobos, and McNeese State Cowboys. All three of these teams are quick playing and good on defense and might be able to pull off a deep run in the tournament. Sometimes, the teams that are under the radar are the ones who end up doing well because, unlike the big programs with high rankings, these teams have nothing to lose.
Without a doubt, March Madness this year will be a great tournament and one to watch. Every year, this event is so crazy and unpredictable that you just can’t get away from the action. The first games are played on March 21st and the final four play on April 6th. This year will be one for the history books.
