Earlier this year back in May, Billie Eilish released her third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT. The album has a bedroom-pop sound to it that I personally really enjoy. Although this album might not be for everyone, I think if you like alternative music, like Billie Eilish, or you just need something to listen to, this would make a great album for you.
“SKINNY”
8/10
I found this song to be a great opener to the album, it appears to be about body image, and reputation on the internet and how that has affected her life. It has a beautiful instrumental at the end, which I think fits in very well with the general vibe of the song.
“LUNCH”
5/10
When HIT ME HARD AND SOFT debuted this was the first song that I had heard, as it’s quite popular. In this song, Billie communicates her homosexuality in a way I haven’t heard before. It’s more upbeat compared to SKINNY. Originally I quite enjoyed this song, but after listening to the full album I just feel like this isn’t the song for me and that it fell a bit short.
“CHIHIRO”
8/10
I really like this song, it’s very smooth, and I feel like I could get lost in it. I struggled to figure out what it was about but I think it’s about being neglected in a relationship and looking back on it and realizing how that harmed you.
“BIRDS OF A FEATHER”6/10
This is in my opinion the most popular song on the album. I hear it so frequently on the radio, that it has slightly tarnished my feelings for it. I enjoy the lyrics exploring her feelings saying that she’d be with this person to the very end, but I simply find it hard to love it after hearing it so much.
“WILDFLOWER”
8/10
I also personally quite like this song. It delves into the conflicting feelings of dating a friend’s ex. She shows this quite well with the line “Did I cross the line?” asking did she go too far. It has a soft guitar strum in the background, which makes it feel weirdly comforting, but it also stays with the more distant feeling of the album. It along with the main part of the song has an area that sounds a bit different afterwards, which multiple songs in the album have, which I absolutely love.
“THE GREATEST”
7/10
This song sounds quite sad to me; it would be great for a rainy day. I personally think it’s about dedicating yourself so much to a person but they don’t reciprocate. The song picks up with a stronger beat later on, which I think shows the conflicting emotion very well.
“L’AMOUR DE MA VIE”
6/10
L’amour de ma vie translates to the love of my life in french. Although this song isn’t my favorite, it is so catchy, I’ve gotten it stuck in my head multiple times. It shows her confessing how she was lying about her feelings and how that affected her, in a bad fashion. This song also has an interesting outro, which pulls a full 180 to the rest of the song, being the most upbeat part of the whole album.
“THE DINER”
3/10
This song is quite unsettling, which I’m guessing is on purpose, as it’s about a stalker. It doesn’t really fit my taste as well as the rest of the album’s songs, but I think it adds some flavor to the album.
“BITTERSUITE”
4/10
This song opens with a glitchy effect and dramatically cuts off soon after, which I find quite nice, and continues on and off with it. Until a part where it loses a lot of flavor to me, and becomes very flat and repetitive.
“BLUE”
6/10
This song starts with a nice feeling, and then has a part that actually sounds quite sad. I found it to be a nice closing song to the album with some parts of “SKINNY” echoing in the background which I felt tied in very well. Although I felt this way about a good amount of the songs on this album, even some of my favorites, this one was way too long and in general wasn’t very interesting.
Overall I would rate this whole album an 8/10, it wasn’t the best album I’ve ever heard, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it fell a bit short with the last three songs, I also found that I had to warm up to some songs on the album. Some people may find some of the songs on this album repetitive, I thought this initially, but with time I started to notice the unique subtleties of each song. This album I found to be very accurate to the album cover, which I absolutely adore, all of the songs feel very dreamy, as though you’re submerged in water. I feel like this was a great addition to Billie Eilish’s work, and I would definitely recommend it.
