Editorial Statement

October 30, 2023

Dear readers,

The Advocate is proud of its role as a forum for student expression, education, and community discussion about issues affecting our school, city, country, and world.

We welcome – and hope – to publish more opinions from the community. If you would like to write for The Advocate, please contact us by emailing [email protected]. If you would like to write anonymously, please let us know so we can take steps to protect your identity. By submitting your piece for publication, you consent to having your writing edited by members of The Advocate Editorial Board. The Advocate reserves the right to deny publication of any piece at any time. We will not tolerate attacks on our writers or discrimination in any form against any group.

We expect to generate discussion throughout our community. That is a good thing. Learning to listen to opinions other than your own, opening your mind to other schools of thought, and disagreeing respectfully with each other are all skills worthy of being practiced.

As referenced in the Albuquerque Academy Student/Parent Handbook, “Academic freedom contains, as an essential element, the right to dissent. Protest or speech against a particular position, action, or situation can be permitted, so long as such protest or speech does not restrict the freedom of thought, sense of safety, or movement of others who hold different views.”

That said, any comments on The Advocate’s website that fail to follow the spirit of our community as defined by the Handbook will be removed by moderators.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this matter and hope all in the community find it within themselves to challenge their presumptions and engage in respectful civil discourse, as we know everyone at this school is capable of.

Sincerely,

The Advocate Editorial Board
