The much-anticipated flag-football game occurred this past Homecoming weekend on Friday, September 14th. The seniors came into the game seemingly the underdogs following their defeat in last year’s game and their relatively small roster size of 12, compared to the junior team which sported a roster of nearly forty players. This size advantage did not phase the senior coaches or players who echoed the phrase “quality over quantity” throughout the entire build-up to the game. On the other side, the junior coaches seemed more concerned with their outfits and specifically headwear (a cowboy hat and flat cap could be seen from the sideline) than preparing their players for the game, who were dancing during their warm-up.
This lackluster warm-up carried over to their play as only three minutes in, senior Isabella Romero carried the ball on an inspired run all the way into the end-zone (6-0). However, the junior’s offense were clearly prepared to play as seven minutes later junior Amelia Bosch ran the ball to score a touchdown (6-6). After multiple possessions without any scoring, it was halftime with the game all tied up.
It was then time for the senior and junior dancers to take the stage. The seniors wore a “frat-esque” outfit and the juniors sported black jerseys and pink tutus. After some impressive acrobatics from the juniors and a shocking display of ballet to the tune of “Thunderstruck” by ACDC by the seniors, the junior dancers came out at halftime with a slight edge over the seniors.
The second half started out with two turnovers on downs, first by the juniors, followed by the seniors. On their second possession of the half the seniors proved that their defense was stout and scored a safety as a result of their efforts (8-6). The game proceeded in this same pattern with possession going back and forth between each team until the final minute of the game. As time wound down the juniors had one last possession to drive the ball up the field and win the game. After a possession that moved the ball nowhere the juniors were hit with a sense of urgency to go for the win. The junior quarterback stepped back to throw the ball upfield and let it fly only to land in the arms of senior Layla Logan who returned it all the way to the endzone, winning the game for the seniors as the final seconds ticked away (14-6)!
After this victorious moment for the senior players the senior dancers were motivated to win the final dances in the battle off the field. Unfortunately for them, the junior dancers continued their acrobatics and “flipped” their way to victory in a performance that was described by one judge as “one of the best dance performances I’ve ever seen.”
The day then ended with skits with some great performances by both the Dance Troupe and Dance Ensemble, who have cemented themselves as some of the best performers at skits throughout the past few years. And, a surprisingly memorable performance by the Boys Soccer Team who sang (and danced?) to the tune of “When I was your Man” and “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and “Love” by Keisha Cole. The Environmental Club also surprised everyone with a hilarious video trying to appeal to the younger generation.
All in all, the Homecoming celebrations were lots of fun and resulted in the Class of 2025 on top (at least on the field)!

The seniors could have involved the deans to perform their brand of beach ball ballet…may have taken them over the top in the dance battle as well as the game.
