Welcome to Academy Julia Pinney!

One of the newest additions to the Albuquerque Academy faculty and staff is 9th-grade English teacher Julia Pinney. We are happy to have such an open and exciting educator teaching here at the Academy. Her experience as a teaching assistant and an educator of outdoor spaces and activities adds much to the Academy community. If you enjoy English classes with a free, open environment and lively discussions, you will enjoy having Ms. Pinney as your instructor. She believes that a classroom should fill students with excitement and be a place where they can comfortably share and think about themselves while in class.
Ms. Pinney was drawn to Albuquerque by the quality and simplicity of life. She enjoys the refreshing change from living in Los Angeles to a smaller-scale city lifestyle and how welcoming and friendly the people here in Albuquerque are. Another thing that brought her here was the large number of friends living in New Mexico. For instance, she considers her roommate’s sheepadoodle, Obi, as her own curly-haired companion.
As for the things Ms. Pinney likes to do in her free time, she loves the outdoors. She takes time to do activities like rock climbing, backpacking, and hiking. Additionally, she spent time in Los Angeles educating people on these activities in an organization called A Place Beyond and leading outdoor activities in other Los Angeles schools. She also just recently started taking guitar lessons. Ms. Pinney is a teacher that would like to know more about her students. She wants to know about the significant people in their lives and their dreams and ideas. She asks the question “How do they want to spend their life, even if it’s just an idea, even if it’s maybe something that they’re not actually going to fulfill?”

How do they want to spend their life, even if it’s just an idea, even if it’s maybe something that they’re not actually going to fulfill?

— Julia Pinney

The last thing Ms.Pinney would like to tell everyone is “that they should spend time reading for fun today.” I encourage anyone, if you ever have the time, to reach out to this inspiring teacher. If you have any questions or want to tell Ms. Pinney about yourself, you can reach her by emailing her at [email protected] or visiting her office in the 9th-grade commons.
