Portuguese Socialist Party Wins Majority in Parliament
February 16, 2022
Portugal’s left socialist party won the majority vote in the snap elections. The Socialist Party won 117 to 118 seats in the 230-seat parliament, about ten more from the last 2019 election of 108. This secured Prime Minister Antonio Costa’s spot in parliament, winning enough seats to run without a coalition. Even so, there was good news for the other parties as well. The Portuguese Social Democratic party had roughly 28 percent of the votes, giving them 79 seats. Additionally, Portugal’s new growing party, Chega, founded by the defectors from the P.S.D, secured more spots in parliament.
