Feminism Club, sponsored by history faculty member Michael Sullivan, plans to release a zine called Little Ms., after beginning work on it last November. A zine, or shortened magazine, was an idea popularized in the 90’s for the promotion of feminist ideas. After reading about them, the club took action and began planning to make it’s own. Feminism Club has modelled its ideas on the famous Ms. Magazine, established in 1971 by Letty Cottin Pogrebin.
The zine will contain pieces such as advice columns, descriptions of worldwide feminist events, and chronicles of the history and culture of feminism. In addition to articles, the zine will showcase graphics and cover art, including many designed by feminism club member and graphic designer Izzy Jerome ’17. “We’re going to use construction paper and do a crafty, homemade style, and then [we’ll] make multiple copies of it,” Jerome said.
Still in the process of layout, the zine will be printed at the Academy and be available Apr. 6, but with a limited run of fewer than 100 copies. Feminism Club hopes that the zine will be informational but at the same time will show a more lighthearted side of feminism. “The main goal of the zine is to show a more fun side of feminism,” Jerome said. “It’s obviously a serious issue, but I think we’re trying to promote an idea that feminism can be for teenagers.” Feminism Club meets at 7:15 in the senior commons every Thursday morning, and new members are always welcome.
