The hexagonal structure in the library has slowly taken shape over the past few days, and many have probably been wondering: What exactly is that? Well, the exhibit is the culmination of four months of work done by Senior Studio, a new class this year at the Academy. Senior Studio is a group of students with diverse artistic visions making a new project every quarter. During the first marking period, we focused on expanding our use of mediums with experimental projects. This helped strengthen our skills and stretch us outside our comfort zones with our next set of library-displayed pieces for the second marking period.
Our skill sets include pottery, screenprinting, collage, mixed media sculpture, traditional painting, and more, so coming together for a group exhibition was inherently difficult. Despite this, we created a theme that encapsulates each of our identities and work. We selected the show theme, Transformation Through Perspective, back in October when the class split into groups to make presentations based on pre-existing themes in each group member’s work. We then spent a class period debating the pros and cons of each unifying theme without our teacher’s aid. Within the selected show theme, we wanted to explore the physical and mental perspectives of people and things in our lives and how we as seniors experience them. We felt the idea of transformation through perspective hit close to home because of where we are in our lives.
Pieces surrounding physical and metaphorical reflectivity meld together into one unit. Each artist has their own take on it, reflecting on their childhood, familial past, future, or emotions. We encourage you to check out this display in person, which will be up in the library gallery until March 15th.
