What are some of the best Christmas songs? Which ones are overplayed and you just can’t get them out of your head? Well here’s what I think.
Let’s start with the basics, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”. Though I understand how people can say this song is overrated, people need to learn the difference between overrated and overplayed; I mean there’s a reason it got popular. I don’t exactly love this song, but it does have its good qualities, like Mariah’s vocals. To be honest, the thing I dislike about this song is how much it’s commercialized. Because it’s so overplayed, it can get annoying, and some people need to learn to hum a different tune.
Another classic I would like to rate is “Santa Baby,” sung by various artists. As much as love songs about Santa, a rosy-cheeked guy often associated with children, bother me, “Santa Baby” is definitely a top tier song. No matter who’s singing it, it’s always amazing. (Except for ones that are heavily auto-tuned!) You can really feel the Christmas spirit when listening to it, and it’s definitely a record-player-worthy song.
Next up on the classics is “Rocking Around The Christmas Tree”! This song is a bit overplayed, but it’s amazing. Yes, some of the lyrics are weird to me, but it’s still a catchy and smooth, comforting song. But really, who is “Rocking around” their Christmas trees, and since when did jingle bells swing? Maybe that’s just my opinion.
“Let it Snow” written by Vaughn Monroe is a great classic, it’s catchy, it’s pretty, and really gives you that Christmas cheer, and according to Reese Sexton, 7th grader, it’s the only acceptable Christmas song to play after Halloween.
“Last Christmas” by Wham! is a great song, but it does annoy me how many students in the 6-7 division call it “Last Rizzmas”, a “brain rot” version of the song.
As much as I love a lot of Christmas classics, “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” might be my favorites, they really remind me of Christmas before the pandemic.
Those are some of my favorite classic hot-cocoa-by-the-fire songs!
