This year, the Albuquerque Academy community welcomes Mr. Conner Butler! Mr. Butler teaches Pre-Calculus for BC in the 10-12 division, sharing his love for math with his students.
Throughout the interview Mr. Butler was honest with me and put thought into the answers he gave to my many questions, showing his willingness to share with our community. When asked about our community, Mr. Butler said that his favorite thing about the Academy is that he can “step out of [his] office and just have green right there” and walk around campus. His inspiration to teach came from former teachers who taught him here in his high school years, with his biggest inspiration being Dr. Vraspir. As he went through college, he realized that he found joy in teaching others, which has led to his current position.
Mr. Butler finds joy in many things, from his favorite food, shepherd’s pie, to his favorite book series, Percy Jackson, which he says, “holds a special place in [his] heart” along with the Discworld book series. He also enjoys writing fiction and playing board games, which is why he helps with the Strategic Games Club (which meets every Friday after school in the Science building). He also is a coach for the Science Olympiad team. He loves teaching complicated high school math, and when I asked him what other subjects he would teach if not math, he said that he would do something that overlaps with higher-level math, possibly something science or computer science related. Though he does have a lot of background knowledge in these other subjects, he chose math because he “knew [he] wanted to (teach) something math-related.”
The Academy is extremely grateful to have Mr. Butler as a new member of the community, and we all give him a warm welcome. If you would like to contact him, you can find him at [email protected]. Welcome to this Returning Charger!
