Welcome to Academy, Ms. Maier!
The Advocate gives a warm welcome to our new World Languages department teacher, Ms. Maier. She is the instructor for all of the German sections and one 9th grade English class. She has been teaching across the globe in places like Japan, Qatar, Vietnam, China, and Panama for 25 years. As a child, she was adopted by German-Americans, but most of her childhood was spent overseas. Despite that, she considers America to be her home.
As a child, Ms. Maier didn’t always want to become a teacher. Her dream was to become a wildlife photographer, but as she grew older she discovered how competitive of a field that is. As she matured she turned to journalism, which is the area she started her studies in. Eventually, she realized that a career in journalism wasn’t for her when she had to badger those who showed no interest in being interviewed. She recalls “[working] for a newspaper one summer, and…trying to get an interview from a CEO of a big company for his comment on the story, and … he was so annoyed and irritated by [her].” She didn’t like the feeling the confrontation gave her and eventually decided a teacher was what she wanted to be.
The most beautiful place she has ever traveled to was when she was given the chance to go to Lhasa, Tibet in China with her husband and children, spending Christmas day and Christmas Eve at Everest Base Camp. One of Ms. Maier’s biggest hobbies is canoe paddling, a skill she developed when she was living in Panama by paddling through the canal. She loves being out on the water. Another thing she enjoys is trying different kinds of foods from many varying cultures.
Her two current favorite books at the moment are Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls and The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. If you’d ever like to give Ms. Maier a visit yourself, her office is A108 in the East Campus Admin Building, or you can reach her by email at [email protected]. So far, her favorite moment at Albuquerque Academy has been the first day, getting to meet all of the students she will be spending the rest of the year with. The school welcomes Ms. Maier this year for many to come!

Good on Ms. Maier for reflecting on her experience talking to those in power and deciding to make a career switch. As one who’s interviewed some high-profile people (at AA, anyways), I can definitely relate to what Maier may have been feeling at the time.
