The Academy varsity tennis team are again State champions. This past week, the Chargers secured their 21st straight state championship, five shy of a national record for consecutive championships in a state.
The 4-day long State tournament consisted of several schools from across New Mexico.
Academy swept Los Alamos 5-0 in the team final. The Chargers did not drop a match the entire tournament.
In individual competition, Connor Dils ’24, who was the one seed, won his first State singles title, defeating Los Alamos’s Ryan Sood ’24, the two seed, 6-1, 6-0.
The Chargers also dominated on the doubles side.
Austin Curtis ’25 and Adrian Hanna ’27, who were the two seed, defeated the number one seeded Santa Fe Prep team of Henry Kaufman ’25 and Jackson Friedland ’25, 6-4, 6-4.
First year player Jacob McMahon-Wooten ’26 spoke about his first-year experience on the team after a successful season.
“It feels great to win State my first year here at Academy,” he said. “At the same time, what I will remember most are the friendships and camaraderie that I was able to experience and be part of this winning season. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to learn with some incredible teammates and coaches.”The Chargers couldn’t have had a better season as they also captured the Metro singles and doubles and the District Championships.
First year coach Tim Cass exceeded all expectations. Not only did he lead his team to success but also secured funding to improve the Academy tennis courts and program. The team is very grateful to have him.
