Mr. Fisher is a new math teacher for the 6/7 Piñon pod at Albuquerque Academy. His main goal is to make sure the majority of his students have a good experience in math.
Mr. Fisher was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and went to college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Vanderbilt’s motto is “strive to grow,” which made an impact on his outlook on teaching, and it is something he continues to think about. His advice to his students is
“Find out what you’re good at, and pursue it like your life depends on it, because it does.” This is very similar to his alma mater’s motto and shows he values learning and understanding how to do things that need to be done. This is why he became a teacher, and every day he works with the students to work towards their interests.
Mr Fisher became a teacher in 1995 and went to Korea to teach English, which helped him see lots of different views of teaching, and of course, he loved it. He decided to teach math because, in his opinion, “there is no controversy.” He then moved to teach math at Maclay School in Florida, home of Rowdy Rauder the Viking. Mr. Fisher came to the Academy because he felt the school’s program matched well with his child-centered view of how a school should operate. His favorite thing at the Academy so far is the Dining Hall and the food they serve there.
As a kid, Mr. Fisher loved to collect baseball cards and play sports like basketball and baseball. He also really liked movies, especially Star Wars, because he said “it’s good versus evil and it’s very simple.” He is the leader of a Star Wars club which he hosts in room 53 in the 6th grade building every Monday during lunch/recess. They are currently watching the Empire Strikes Back.
Mr Fisher is a great addition to Albuquerque Academy, and we’re so grateful that he is a Charger now!
Welcome to Academy Mr. Fisher!
