Welcome to Academy Divya Kurup!
This year, the Academy welcomes a new math teacher to the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades, Mrs. Kurup! When asked about her favorite part of teaching, Kurup explained the most memorable kind of moment for her, “The joy or the satisfaction you get by teaching someone and the joy you see in their eyes when they understand, especially something like math.” Kurup is a wonderful teacher, but she wasn’t always set on the path of teaching.
Before moving to the United States to get her Masters of Science in telecommunications and network management in the states, Kurup got her Bachelor’s degree in electronics and telecommunication in India where she worked as an engineer. After getting her Masters in New York, she lived and worked in Belgium as a PhD researcher and then eventually moved back to New York with her husband. Kurup’s daughter started in a Montessori school, which is where she says, “I was introduced to Montessori philosophy and the Montessori way of education.” She took a job as a substitute at that school, where she truly enjoyed the work and helped the school expand. Then, she became a full-time teacher there.
After working in education in New York, she moved to Albuquerque, worked at a different Montessori school, and then joined the Academy. When asked what about the Academy that she likes, Kurup says she “loves the Academy because there’s a good balance here for teachers.” For instance, Kurup says that she appreciates having time for her work life and her home life. At the Academy, she explains, “You’re supported to succeed.” She also loves the Academy because of our lovely campus. “It’s a great campus. It’s a beautiful place. I love my office, it has a great view,” said Kurup. She enjoys Albuquerque for the same reasons. Kurup loves the vast blue skies and the gorgeous nature we have here, but mostly, she loves all the sun. When not grading math homework and responding to emails, Kurup enjoys writing poetry and short stories about women in society. She also enjoys painting!
Mrs. Kurup is a wonderful new addition to the math department, so if you ever need some help with hard math homework or how to study for a test, her office number is MK212 and her email is [email protected]. Feel free to reach out to her for any questions you may have!
