Jake Herrin

Welcome to the 6/7 division, Jake Herrin! Herrin is the new 7th grade history teacher. In addition, Herrin has been coaching the boys varsity basketball team for two years prior to becoming a teacher. Herrin would like community members to know, “that my doors are always open, whether you were one of my students or not.”
Herrin has been coaching basketball and teaching for 10 years. “I can’t see myself doing one without the other,” he says. Basketball has been a huge part of Herrin’s life. He played in both middle school and high school, and he has been coaching ever since he started teaching. “It’s one of those activities you can do by yourself.” When asked about what drew him to basketball, Herrin said, “When I was a kid I always had basketball to keep me entertained.”
Herrin has lived in Albuquerque and its surrounding areas his entire life. He attended UNM for college, and has been teaching at different schools in the area for his entire career. He has worked in high schools, so this is the first year he will be working with middle school students. “Seventh graders are a whole new environment. They are really nice and I wish that I got to be around them more,” Herrin said, when asked how he likes teaching in middle school so far.

I am the best fan of a school, wherever I’m at.

When he isn’t playing basketball or teaching, Herrin also enjoys traveling. He has been to eight different countries in Europe, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and many different states in the USA. His favorite president is Teddy Roosevelt. If you have him as your teacher, he promises to make him your favorite president too! Herrin also loves to spend time with his family. While staying at home, he and his wife have been working on their backyard. Herrin says, “Being around my son, that is the best thing in quarantine for me.”

Hopefully, you can meet Herrin soon. He looks forward to meeting you! “I always try to support students by attending anything they are participating in, whether it is sports related or not,” he says. “I am the best fan of a school, wherever I’m at.”
